Research in gonococcal population genetics by receiving, storing and documenting DNA samples, and ensuring maintenance of sample integrity; amplifying target genes by PCR and purifying PCR products; submitting samples for DNA sequencing, designating DNA sequences, and verifying DNA sequences using various methods; creating a sequence databank and analyzing data using bioinformatic software.
Conduct research pertaining to the molecular biology of antimicrobial resistance required; knowledge of molecular genetics methods an asset.
Organize, archive, maintain and update documents (both electronic versions and hardcopies) pertaining to research.
Draft and organize correspondence to numerous collaborators/offices on campus, locally, nationally and internationally.
Conduct literature searches as required; perform data analysis; preparation and distribution of reports as required.
Working with a senior technician, is responsible for basic laboratory maintenance, upkeep of laboratory equipment and maintenance of laboratory supply inventory (equipment, bacterial strains and chemicals/reagents); makes recommendations for purchasing.

Qualifications
Minimum B.Sc. degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or Biotechnology; related laboratory research experience is an asset.
Knowledge and skills of molecular technologies, including PCR, DNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis of DNA sequencing data.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Effective record keeping, archive documents management both in electronic version and hardcopies.
Effective computer skills for data management and analytical skills for data interpretation.
Ability to work as an effective team member and to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to plan ahead, prepare materials to meet deadlines and keep researchers informed of progress.
Willingness to learn new procedures if required.
Term: 1.0 FTE, 1year term with good possibility for renewal
