JOB SUMMARY:
To assist the principal investigator performing molecular and cell biologic experiments including cell culture, preparation of RNA, DNA and protein from cells and tissue specimens, immunoprecipitation, Western blots, PCR, cloning, high throughput screening and genotyping transgenic mice colonies. Duties include: executing experiments involving protein biochemistry and molecular biology techniques; troubleshooting experiment problems; using imaging software to document Western blot, DNA and protein electrophoresis results; performing high throughput screening using luminescent and other readouts; genotyping mice and tissue culture specimens; providing contributions to the preparation of research publications; assisting in the training of graduate students, undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows; maintaining clean and orderly working environment; and performing other related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors degree (BSc in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, or Biology preferred) plus minimum three years of related experience in a laboratory setting. Completion of UBC safety courses in biosafety and chemical safety. Experience in microbiological culture, molecular and cell biology techniques. Knowledge of preparation of culture media and safety procedures. Familiarity with laboratory terminology related to media preparation. Computer experience required (PC, Microsoft Office, and databases preferred). Accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to multi-task and prioritize work to meet deadlines. Ability to adapt techniques and procedures to instructions. Ability to use, operate, and care for laboratory equipment. Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
